Kitchen Cabinetry 101: Types of Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are the focal point of any kitchen; therefore, great care must be taken in choosing the type of cabinets for your kitchen. There are three main types of kitchen cabinets: base cabinets, wall cabinets, and tall cabinets. However, you are likely to combine two or all three cabinet types to fit your needs and maximize your kitchen space. Therefore, it is important to know all you can about the different types of cabinets before you make your selections. Explained below are some of the defining details of the most commonly used cabinets today.

1. Base Cabinets

In cabinetry terms, base cabinets are known as heavy lifters because they provide the bulk of your storage spaces. Base cabinets are usually designed to have shelves, especially for items like cleaning supplies, pots, pans, and other cookware. They can also include features like wastebaskets, spice racks, and drawer inserts. Base cabinets come in many variations. Some of the most popular include base easy-access, base pull-out, open base, two-drawer base, and corner cabinets. All of these types come with their distinct features that set them apart from one another.

2. Wall Cabinets

Wall cabinets provide storage spaces for kitchen items like food containers, jars, and food boxes. They are mounted just above the base cabinet and are ideal for easily accessing kitchen items you need while standing or moving about. They make it easy for you to get whatever kitchen item you need without searching to the back of a cupboard. Just like the base cabinets, wall cabinets also come in various types like pull-down wire baskets and easy-access storage cabinets. The latter comes designed with three shelves and wire racks on the insides, making it ideal for storing both small and large items.

3. Tall Cabinets

As the name implies, tall cabinets are very long cabinets, up to 96 inches in height. They are designed to have more storage space than both wall and base cabinets. Most people use tall cabinets as a pantry, while others use them as utility storage. This type of cabinet can accommodate all sizes of items, from bulk food supplies to cleaning equipment like mops and brooms. Some of the most commonly used tall cabinets include made-to-fit tall cabinets, oven and microwave cabinets, and tall pantry pullouts.
